Travel Time by Mode

The same distance takes very different amounts of time depending on how you travel. Here’s what each mode means in this calculator.

  1. Car (driving): The most common option, and the most variable, because real driving time shifts with traffic, road type, and time of day. Use it for road trips and commutes, and add a little buffer if you’ll be driving through a city at rush hour.
  2. Walking: Based on a typical walking pace of around 3 mph (5 km/h). Handy for short, city-center distances where walking is genuinely faster than waiting for a ride.
  3. Cycling: Uses a typical cycling speed of about 10 to 12 mph (16 to 19 km/h). Your real time depends on hills, bike lanes, and fitness, so treat it as a middle-of-the-road estimate.
  4. Train / public transit: An estimate for getting between two places by rail or transit. Because real transit depends on schedules, transfers, and stops, use this as a rough planning figure and check the operator for exact times.
  5. Airplane: A rough flight-time estimate based on the distance between your two points. It reflects time in the air, so remember to add check-in, security, boarding, and travel to and from the airport when you plan a real trip.

How Travel Time is Estimated

The calculator works out the distance between your starting point and destination, then applies a typical speed for the mode you picked. Driving uses a road-travel speed, walking and cycling use a walking or cycling pace, and the train and airplane options use estimated speeds for those journeys.
